Sustainable design

As architects, we recognise our role in improving the built and natural environments to create a better future for our communities and our planet.

At BMA, our sustainability journey is focused on strengthening our knowledge of sustainable and regenerative practices and applying these in our projects. We seek to partner with our clients to explore environmentally friendly design solutions and sustainable materials selection.

We have implemented a Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) to identify opportunities to progress our design and sustainability practices, set goals and provide a roadmap for improving our environmental performance.

We are a signatory to Architect’s Declare – a global network of architects advocating radical change in the building sector around climate, social justice, and biodiversity.

Our commitment is demonstrated through projects such as WS2 in Perth - a showcase of innovative sustainable design, engineering and construction delivering both investment and occupant value while achieving high environmental performance.

Designing with Country

As architects, our industry greatly impacts Country
and, as such, we must engage in celebrating and
respecting this relationship.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have long espoused the cultural, social, economic and environmental benefits embedded in the relationship of Caring for Country.

Country-centred design is about building meaningful connections to both Country and community. This includes developing holistic, place-based knowledge frameworks that result in improved health, cultural, economic and environmental outcomes.

At our latest Tweeds Head project, a comprehensive Connecting with Country process is underway with consultation and engagement with First Nations people being reflected in the design concepts.

On our current Smithfield development, key objectives include restoring and enhancing biodiversity, strengthening and expanding bushland and educating communities on the importance of caring for Country. This approach is being reflected in the landscape strategy to create spaces that are inclusive, respectful of Country and supportive of local ecology and culture.
